Cataloging pieces of history
When a fire closed the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History in March, it shuttered Lewiston's only public art gallery, but it also brought to light a collection of artifacts that has been collecting dust for decades.
Stored in the center's basement was the H.L. Talkington collection, hundreds of items from around the Northwest and world collected by one of Idaho's premier historians in the early 1900s.
Talkington was popular college history professor
Even though there is a building on campus named after him, and a faculty award, few today at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston know much about H.L. Talkington.
You can't poke around long in Idaho history without running into Talkington's name, says Keith Petersen, Idaho state historian and associate director of the Idaho State Historical Society.

'Public Enemies' dazzles the eye but drags
Movie Review
LOS ANGELES - With "Public Enemies," all the pieces would seem to be in place for an epic gangster drama: director Michael Mann, who has an affinity for complicated criminals; stars Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, who are famous for immersing themselves in their roles; and a thrilling true story of brazen bank robbers on the run.
Chicago band Wilco revels in rock
MANCHESTER, Tenn. - When it's remarked to Jeff Tweedy while walking backstage at the recent Bonnaroo Music Festival that it's a shame he won't have time to catch most of the festival's other acts, he turns and smiles.
"Yeah, well, I don't really like music."
TV stations struggle with DTV viewer loss
NEW YORK - The government is helping two dozen TV stations that became difficult to receive by antenna when they switched to new frequencies as part of the digital TV transition, the Federal Communications Commission said Thursday.
Most of the stations, in cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, New York and Dallas, moved their digital broadcasts from the UHF band to the VHF band on June 12, when they turned off their analog broadcasts.
