Great story on ‘79-’80 Cougs in TNT

Posted on 19 March 2008 by Jeanne DePaul

Along with the great stories about the WSU Cougar men’s basketball teams’ trip to the NCAA tournament written by our own Josh Wright, I usually check around to see what other newspapers have to say on the subject.

Todd Milles of the Tacoma News Tribune has taken a look back in a story in today’s edition. He compares this season’s trio of senior starters with a trio who played in the 1979-1980: Terry Kelly, Stuart House and Don Collins.

I was a senior in high school that year, headed to WSU the next fall. My older brother had graduated from WSU in 1977 and he and a buddy decided to trek over to Pullman to see the Cougs play UCLA in a huge game. He took me along. The pass was the worst I’d seen it until this year — snow piled so high alongside the off-ramps that it was like driving through a tunnel — but we made it to Pullman only to be stymied in our efforts to get into the coliseum to see the game. We ended up watching it on television in a friend’s house.

I don’t remember who won, though Milles’ story says it was the Cougs. He talks to George Raveling, the iconic Cougar head coach, as well as Donaldson.

He wasn’t able to track down House, and Raveling tells Milles he thinks House might have died a few years back.

The main thing I remember about the 6-foot 11-inch Stuart House was instead of just his last name on the back of his jersey like the other players, he had “The House” on the back. Cool.

Anyway, check it out. It’s a great read.
