The theme this week was for the contestants to sing songs from the year they were born. That’s always kind of fun. And how wonderful they were able to cut the show down to 90 minutes.
Ramiele Malubay: She took on Heart, which is a challenge. Can she sing like the rock ‘n’ roll Wilson sisters on “Alone”? She should have been able to nail it but she didn’t. She sounded like she was shouting and that it took too much effort and I didn’t believe her for a minute. I really want to hear her take ahold of one and belt it out. I’m still waiting.
Jason Castro: I’m really tired of this guy and his “duh” demeanor. Send him home now. “Fragile” was just OK, he stayed on key, he played the guitar, blah, blah, blah. He bores me and I’m through with him AND his dreads.
Syesha Mercado: She could win on her looks alone, but she can sing, too. She ripped out “If I Were Your Woman” and I believed her. She brought the finger-shaking and she brought her voice.
Chikesie: I love this guy as much as I hate some of the other contestants (cougharchuletacough). He took on the ballad “If Only For One Night.” I believed him, too. He poured some serious feeling into the song and he changed the tempo and played to the audience wonderfully. This guy has star power and he knows how to hold a note.
Brooke White: She had a false start at the beginning of “Every Breath You Take” and that was weird. I haven’t seen that before. This stalker song by the Police isn’t one of my favorites but I thought her version was OK. I liked how the hoarseness of her voice sounded this week. Perhaps she should get sick more often. With straight hair, she looks like an entirely different, much better-looking person.
Michael Johns: What is it about Queen that gets this guy fired up? Lucky for him they had a hit the year he was born, huh? But can he sing Queen every week? This guy can flat sing and we’ve known that for awhile now. He held his notes and he rocked the house. But why can’t he sing anything else?
Carly Smithson: This performance had potential. “Total Eclipse of the Heart” is a great tune and she poured herself into it, but Randy was right, she couldn’t stay on pitch. Some of the time she sounded like she was shouting and that last bit, she couldn’t even stay in tune. It was cringe-inducing. Carly should be leading the pack, but she keeps forgetting to bring it. And she needs to learn to dress.
David Archuleta: The Sleestak was at it again. He tried to sing something — what? — a little more medium-tempo and it was even more painful to watch. I think he caught Amanda’s “crouch and look like you’re in pain” singing style. I really can’t stand this kid. Could you tell? It’s pointless to rail against him when all the teeny-boppers are wearing out their little fingers texting in their votes for him. But it makes me feel better and that’s all I got here.
Kristy Lee Cook: She sounded good on “God Bless the U.S.A.” It’s a pretty straightforward song but she still had to get up and sing it and it was a great choice. She did struggle a little bit with the key change in the middle but the country tinge sounds good on her. She needs to stick with that.
David Cook: Ugh, I can’t tell you how much I hated his version of “Billie Jean.” He has a good and powerful voice and has a good chance of winning but I can’t get over his cocky attitude. Perhaps it’s just how much I hate his “I am the god of rock” persona on stage. So he sounded good but I hated it, all the same. (Did you notice that I didn’t say how much I hate his hair?)
Random notes:
> Who gave Paula those gloves? Take them back now.
> How sad did Chikesie look after the judges got done ripping him?
> If Carly Smithson had all that wildly curly hair when she was a kid, why is her hair stick straight now? Did she get one of those expensive straighteners done or what?
Who should go home? It’s time for Jason Castro. It really is.
