Balanced effort leads to 87-48 trouncing of Northwest Christian in home opener
What made L-C senior guard Nikki DePeel content on Monday night wasn’t solely based on what the Activity Center scoreboard read.
Sure, the 87-48 trouncing of Northwest Christian factored into her ear-to-ear grin, but it was the manner in which it transpired.
L-C shot an adequate percentage from the floor (48.1), had an above-average showing from the line (34-for-36) and outrebounded the Beacons (42-27) in the Warriors’ home opener.
Each active player on the roster also reached the scoring column for L-C, which bounced back after falling to Washington State 76-58 in an exhibition Sunday.
DePeel, who had a game-high 22 points, was quick to note a balanced effort.
“We all had a great team effort,” said DePeel, who was 11-of-12 from the charity strip. “They were overplaying us and that opened up some lanes for us guards; our posts were a little taller, too, so we had that advantage.”
Offensively, the Warriors were assertive from the get-go, attacking the rim in halfcourt while exhibiting cohesiveness in transition. L-C jumped out to a quick 17-6 lead courtesy of back-to-back buckets by Alyssa Fierro.
Northwest Christian went on a subsequent 5-2 run, but the Warriors answered with a 35-8 run of their own before going into the half with a commanding 50-25 lead.
From there, L-C continued to make the nonconference affair with the NAIA Division II member a laugher.
Lapwai freshman Annie Kane went on a personal 5-0 run with a jumper from the wing and a 3 from the top of the key to make it 72-34 with 8:13 left in regulation, and the rest was history.
Kenna Reiter and Fierro, who also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, each had 12 points.
When L-C ran its halfcourt offense, the Beacons were pinned on the block and forced to foul, which led to a 33-3 scoring advantage from the line.
“We were able to run through our stuff and our timing was pretty good,” said L-C coach Brian Orr. “I thought our timing was pretty well for this time of year.”
Seeing his young bench combine for 45 points in its regular season debut was just as pleasing.
“Everyone was able to come in and contribute,” Orr said.” And that’s always a positive way to start off the year.”
Northwest Christian was paced by Jackie Cunningham’s nine points.
L-C (1-0) travels to Azusa Pacific of Azusa, Calif., on Thursday.
