The Washington State basketball team basketball team knocked off Nicholls State 78-69 to reach the finals of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage.
It was a similar formula for the Cougars, who used another 20-plus point game from Klay Thompson and got some big-time production from DeAngelo Casto in the post — 18 points, 14 boards. Thompson continued his red-hot start to the season with 21 points, six assists, two blocks and two steals in 37 minutes on the floor. The sophomore stud has now put up 20-plus in all five games this season, and he’s averaging a gaudy 25.4 so far.
WSU started off slow and trailed 31-29 at the half. Shooting wasn’t a problem in those opening 20 minutes (52.9 percent), but they only put up 17 shots at the basket, compared to 31 for Nicholls State. WSU remedied that in the second half and ended up shooting a sizzling 59.1 percent for the game.
Freshman guard Reggie Moore continued his strong start to the season with 14 points and four assists. WSU had 16 turnovers.
The Cougs will now face San Diego in the final tomorrow at 8 p.m. PST on Fox College Sports. It’s been a strange event, as the most high-profile team, No. 25 Oklahoma, lost games to SD and Houston.
