Gordon Jones, the chief executive officer of Clearwater Paper, admitted Thursday that he hesitated just a little before accepting his present position to lead the company that was created a year ago when what was Potlatch split into two parts.
He first learned of the opportunity to head what used to be most of Potlatch’s manufacturing operations when he got a call from a headhunter, said Jones in speech to Lewiston Chamber of Commerce members on Thursday.
His initial reaction was “I don’t know if I want to do that or not,” Jones said.
But Jones, who has decades of experience in the paper making industry, chose to accept the position. “Potlatch had always been a very revered competitor of mine so I knew the assets were in good shape.”
He was also convinced those behind the spin-off had good motives of trying to make Potlatch’s land holdings and manufacturing run more efficiently, Jones said. “It wasn’t someone trying to get rid of something.”
You can read more about what Jones had to say in the Northwest section of Friday’s paper. You can read the profile I did of Jones in the summer of 2008 here.

Elaine, These quarterly events are a joint collaboration between Valley Vision and the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce. The audience includes Valley Vision members and Chamber members as well. At this luncheon Gordon was Valley Vision’s guest and here at our request. I would appreciate it if you would refer to this as a Valley Vision, Chamber of Commerce event.
Thanks
