Proposal looks at cross-deputization between Idaho, tribes

Posted on 07 February 2010

A bill slated to be introduced in the Idaho Legislature this week would give tribal police the authority to arrest or ticket non-tribal members.

The proposal is being sought by officials with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, who see it as an answer to public safety concerns . The Idaho Sheriff’s Association has voted against the draft bill they say gives no reciprocity to county deputies.

A recent draft of the bill, theĀ  State and Indian Tribal Law Enforcement Act, can be found by clicking the link. A final draft of the bill is expected to be introduced in the Legislature this week.

A story detailing both sides of the issue can be found in today’s edition at lmtribune.com.
