Better than an iPhone?

Posted on 19 October 2009 by Jeff

You may have seen the mysterious television commercials that attack Apple’s iPhone for not providing some features. The commercial is for a website called Droid Does which is a promotional piece for Verizon’s latest attempt to knock the iPhone off it’s smartphone throne. Continue Reading

The new and free Windows

Posted on 23 July 2008 by Jeff

ubuntulogo.pngWell, not the actual Windows operating system, but close. Its called Ubuntu (pronounced oo-boon-too) and it is a 100% free and open source Linux based operating system. Ubuntu has been around for a few years, but recently it has received much attention due to its ease of use, full feature software pack and cost.

Ubuntu Desktop ScreenshotWith the early short comings of Windows Vista, the latest version of the Windows Operating System from Microsoft, many computer users have made the switch to Apple’s OS X operating system. The problem is that to run Apple’s OS X requires the use of their hardware. So you’d have to buy all new computers, and Apple isn’t cheap.

The other option is to run Linux. Specifically Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a feature-rich and stable alternative to the two computer juggernauts and will run on almost any computer configuration. Ubuntu comes stock with just about any piece of software you could need. Firefox for browsing the web, Thunderbird for E-mail just to name a couple. The Ubuntu Team even provides training and support for those less tech savvy.

I hear all too often “Isn’t Linux for hackers and networking guys?”. Not anymore. Ubuntu has pushed Linux into the mainstream desktop operating system arena and isn’t looking back.

The iTunes App Store

Posted on 10 July 2008 by Jeff

itunes.jpgiphone.jpgIf you use iTunes regularly, you were probably just asked to update to the latest version. The update added a new section to iTunes Store called Applications.

The new section adds the ability for iPhone and iPod Touch owners to download applications, both free and not, to your device. These applications add many different types of functionality. From games to productivity, there is probably an application to fill your need.

A few I’m excited about are (Warning: direct links to iTunes):

  • Super Monkeyball – Classic game ported from many console video game systems. A little “cutesy” looking, but fun nonetheless.
  • Twitterific Premium – A very functional application that utilizes all of Twitter’s features.
  • NY Times – View articles and photos, customize categories and save articles for offline viewing.
  • Pandora Radio – My favorite Internet radio Web site now allows you to stream their music from your iPhone. Oh happy day!
  • Paypal – Check your balance, transfer funds, etc.
  • Pownce – A social network based around the need to send files to friends. Now send directly from your iPhone.

Anyone planning on buying a new iPhone or upgrading your current iPhone or iPod Touch have any recommendations on apps I may have missed?
