On Saturday morning, April 19, we were on our way from Missoula, Montana to our home in Elk City, Idaho. Just before the area where there were numerous slides this winter, we saw two wolves just up off the highway. We stopped the car and they were within 5-10 feet of us. They looked at the car and at us and walked toward the car. That's when I grabbed my digital camera and got these shots. One wolf got within a foot and a half of the car. They weren't scared or panicky but seemed very relaxed like us being there was no big deal. We started the car again which didn't frighten them, and drove off. They were still there when we left. The whole experience lasted about 10 minutes. The two wolves seemed to be puppies instead of full grown adults.
This was quite an experience as we have heard of people around Elk City seeing wolves and we've seen wolf tracks on our property, but no one got this close that I've heard of. I wonder what they would have done if we'd gotten out of the car. They had no fear of us at all. It was an amazing experience for those of us in the car!
