12:15 p.m.: Leonard sentenced to prison

May 15, 2009, 12:14 pm

MOSCOW -- James Leonard, 25, was sentenced this morning to five to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in February for the 2007 shooting death of Tyler Lee.

But 2nd District Judge Jeff Brudie retained jurisdiction over the case, meaning Leonard, if successfully completing a 180-day period of incarceration at Cottonwood, could be released on probation within four to six months.

Leonard did not make a statement at the sentencing. Lees father, Loftin Lee of West Valley City, Utah, read a prepared statement in court and then told reporters afterwards that he was disappointed in the sentence and thinks Leonard should serve from 15 years to life in prison.
