A man suspected of killing three people in Louisiana tried to hang himself Monday in a cell at the Nez Perce County Jail, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
Officers at the jail found Robert Leroy McCoy, 34, of Shreveport, La., unconscious and hanging from his bedsheet at about 1:05 p.m. They cut him free from the makeshift noose and started CPR.
Medics from the Lewiston Fire Department arrived at 1:08 p.m. and took over the resuscitation efforts. According to the press release, McCoy began breathing and responding to the emergency care.
“They (jailers) started breathing and CPR right away because he was out,” said Jail Commander Lt. Steve Lutes. “They were right there and got on it and we had a successful safe.”
He was stabilized at the jail and taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston at 1:35 p.m. According the sheriff’s office, McCoy responded to medical treatment at the hospital and was returned to the jail where he remains under suicide watch.
McCoy is suspected of shooting his wife’s parents and her 17-year-old son at a Bossier City, La., housing complex last Monday. He allegedly fled across the country by hitchhiking. Law enforcement officials tracked his path to Spokane on Friday and notified Idaho State Police he was headed to Idaho as a passenger aboard a Swift Transportation tractor-trailer. That truck was located on Normal Hill where it was converged on by at least seven police cars. McCoy was taken into custody and booked into the Nez Perce County Jail on three murder warrants, giving false information to police officers and possession of a concealed weapon, a .380 caliber handgun found behind his seat.
