LCSC apartment fire started in attic

August 19, 2008, 11:38 am

A late-night fire that erupted in an attic at a Lewis-Clark State College apartment appears to have been sparked by an electrical problem.
Lewiston Fire Department Capt. Steve Repp said "fire stops" and sprinklers in the attic area of the College Place apartments kept the blaze confined to one area above the building's third floor Monday night.
Fire crews responded to the apartment on the 800 block of Fourth Street at about 11 p.m. for a report of smoke showing.
The fire is believed to have started in the attic above apartment 304, Repp said, causing unspecified water and fire damage. Firefighters later checked apartments on either side for extension of the blaze.
The building was evacuated for the night, Repp said. Two units were occupied in advance of next week' s start of classes. Repp said the residents in both units had other places to stay overnight.
Firefighters handed the building over to LCSC maintenance staff shortly before midnight.
