NEZPERCE Lewis County Sheriff Brian Brokop got his new administration underway Monday five weeks earlier than expected because the former sheriff, Phil Steen, suddenly resigned last week.
Brokop said he was not involved in the workings of the sheriffs office before last week and has no idea why Steen resigned early.
Brokop won a three-way race for the position in November. Steen did not run for a second term following an attempted recall effort last winter.
Some county residents expressed discontent with Steen after most of the countys search and rescue members resigned in January, saying they could not work with the sheriff.
