April 24, 2009, 10:49 am

STITES The Idaho County sheriffs office has confirmed that a 21-year-old Kamiah man was shot and killed early this morning while allegedly breaking into the Stites Grocery Store.

According to a news release from the sheriffs office, the reporting party, at 3:24 a.m., advised he had shot a male intruder in the leg and that there was a second male who fled the scene on foot. It was unknown if either subject was armed.

The unidentified 21-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld until family notifications have been made.

Because the incident occurred on the Nez Perce Tribe reservation and the deceased man is believed to be a tribal member, the FBI, ISP and tribal police are involved in the investigation.
