FARM GIRL grows a fair
OAKESDALE - MaryJane Butters says she wants to continue spreading the message and wealth of her ever-growing "farm girl" community.
To that end, the self-made organic farmer, author, entrepreneur and advocate for simple living has decided to disperse her annual MaryJane's Farm Fair throughout several Palouse country towns on the Fourth of July.
Is an ounce of prevention really worth a pound of cure?
CHICAGO - When it comes to health care spending, an ounce of prevention is seldom worth a pound of cure.
Take Mrs. Jones, a hypothetical 55-year-old obese woman at risk for diabetes. It costs $900 a year to hire a personal lifestyle coach to help her lose weight and prevent diabetes. Suppose that the coaching works for Mrs. Jones, and she is spared diabetes and all the resulting health bills.

It's a fee for all
MINNEAPOLIS - As if charging $15 to check a bag weren't enough, two airlines are asking for $5 more beginning this summer if you pay at the check-in counter - a fee on top of a fee.
Of course, you could always pay your baggage fee from home. The airlines call it the "online discount."
Time to buy if you want to fly
MINNEAPOLIS - If you've been waiting for the lowest possible airfare for a trip this summer, it may be time to get off the fence.
Fares have dropped for months while travelers held off buying tickets because they were afraid of losing a job or worried about affording even a scaled-back vacation. But with July 4th fast approaching and jet fuel prices rising, some fares could be set to climb again.

Recession takes toll on recent college grads
WASHINGTON - The tough economy and tight labor market have tarnished the luster of a bachelor's degree for young college graduates seeking employment.
New monthly survey data from the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston finds that during the first four months of 2009, 49.9 percent of the nation's 4 million college graduates age 25 and under were working in jobs that required a college degree. That's down from 54 percent for same period last year.
Wheeling dealing & dying
SANDY LAKE, Pa. - Upset that General Motors was planning to "wind down" the dealership where they had loyally bought their Chevys for years, schoolteacher Marie Kohr and her husband, Kevin, went to GM with a message: "You are killing America."
The Kohrs included with their letter a copy of a high school yearbook ad that Walker Chevrolet bought in tiny Sandy Lake in 1937 - a purchase the dealership has made every year since.

If the premise of credit card debt settlement sounds too good to be true, that's because it is.
