WEB EXTRA: Laptops and sperm count
Just a warning for men about laptops and infertility: A Chicago fertility expert warns that along with wearing briefs and soaking in the hot tub, laptop use may diminish sperm count.
"Laptops are becoming increasingly common among young men wired into the latest technology," said Dr. Suzanne Kavic, director of the division of reproductive endocrinology at Loyola University Health System. "However, the heat generated from laptops can impact sperm production and development making it difficult to conceive down the road."
WEB EXTRA: 47,000 elderly falls in U.S. tied to canes, walkers
ATLANTA - Health officials say more than 47,000 elderly Americans end up in emergency rooms each year from falls involving walkers and canes.
That's almost 3 percent of all falls among people 65 and older. Government researchers came up with the estimate by looking at six years of ER medical records. Nearly 9 out of 10 of the injuries involved walkers, rather than canes.
Expectation for a long life falls among teens
CHICAGO - A surprising number of teenagers - nearly 15 percent - think they're going to die young, leading many to drug use, suicide attempts and other unsafe behavior, new research suggests.
The study, based on a survey of more than 20,000 kids, challenges conventional wisdom that says teens engage in risky behavior because they think they're invulnerable to harm. Instead, a sizable number of teens may take chances "because they feel hopeless and figure that not much is at stake," said study author Dr. Iris Borowsky, a researcher at the University of Minnesota.
Anti-inflammatory drug can lead to rebound headaches
Q I get terrible rebound headaches from anti-inflammatory drugs (both prescription and OTC). My doctors seem to not believe me; instead, they insist that anti-inflammatories are just what I need for arthritis. Have you heard of this, and do you know of any anti-inflammatories that don't cause headaches when you stop taking them?
A Joel Saper, M.D., is director of The Michigan Headache and Neurological Institute and past president of the American Association for the Study of Headache. He has long been concerned about rebound headaches resulting from overuse of pain relievers, including anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Aleve or Motrin IB.
An easily swallowed risk FDA weighs options to reduce number of painkiller overdoses
WASHINGTON - Tylenol, Excedrin, NyQuil. These common brands and others have come to symbolize safe, convenient relief from the aches and pains of everyday life.
But this week the Food wand Drug Administration is focusing on a seldom-discussed side effect of the medications: severe liver damage. Since the drugs first became widely available in the 1950s, the FDA has tried to minimize the risks of acetaminophen - the pain-relieving, fever-reducing ingredient in Tylenol and dozens of other prescription and over-the-counter medications.
