Green running
DUCHESNE, Utah - Rafting the Green River through Utah's Desolation Canyon is a bit like floating Idaho's lower Salmon River in reverse.
River runners on the lower Salmon are accustomed to two to three days of rapids followed by a long day of rowing on relatively flat water on the Snake River to reach the take-out at Heller Bar. The Green River starts with a slog of a first day. The water is flat and the rapids are a good day and a half away from the put-in at Sand Wash. But after that first day or so, the stretch is well placed, with rapids all the way to the take out at Swasey's Beach.
Catch more than luck with little Serendipity
The Serendipity is a very effective imitation of a midge pupa or emerger.
It has a very buoyant thorax that is made from deer hair, which has been spun and clipped to shape. It can be used in both streams and lakes. In lakes it will be taken as the chironomid midge is changing into an adult. The midge rises toward the water's surface, hanging with the back of the insect's thorax in the surface film. This is a critical stage in the insect's life and the Serendipity imitates this stage very effectively.
