Symphony plans two performances at winery

PULLMAN - The Washington Idaho Symphony is preparing for two end-of-August concerts at the Wawawai Canyon Winery on the Moscow-Pullman Highway. Performances are at 6 p.m. Monday and Aug. 31.

General admission is $10 per person or $15 for two people. Subscriber admission is $5 per person or $7.50 for two subscribers. Senior citizen and student admission is $8 per person or $12 for two students or two seniors.

Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance by mailing a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Washington Idaho Symphony, P.O. Box 9185, Moscow, ID 83843.

Moscow band to play at school donation drive

MOSCOW - The Moscow band Groovhaus will perform at a school supply drive at the Eastside Marketplace tonight.

"Eastside's Groovhaus for the Schoolhaus" is from 6-9 p.m. The event is a supply and donation drive for local schools. There will be a food and a beer garden hosted by Mix.

Hog Heaven Big Band to play Uniontown dance

UNIONTOWN - The Hog Heaven Big Band, a 16-piece swing ensemble, will perform from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday at Artisans at Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. The concert will be preceded by free dance lessons at 6 p.m.

The band plays swing music from the 1920s-1940s. Admission is $8 for couples, $5 for singles and free for children younger than 12. Those participating in the free dance lessons must pay the admission fee to the concert.

Troy City Park is site for concert and movie

TROY - The Troy Horizons Group will present a free concert by ColdRail Blues Band and covered-dish dinner from 7-9 tonight in the city park.

The concert will be followed by a free showing of "Pirates of the Caribbean" at dusk.

Annual Palousafest is Saturday at UI

MOSCOW - Live entertainment will be part of Palousafest 2009 Saturday starting at 5:30 p.m. on the Theophilus Tower lawn.

The annual welcome party for new students is from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Informational tables run until 7 p.m. There will be free food and live entertainment until 10 p.m. The theme this year is "Here We Have Idaho."

Magician will give free show at LCSC Monday

The Norman Magic Experience, featuring magician Norman Ng of Portland, Maine, will perform a free magic show at 8 p.m. Monday at the Silverthorne Theatre on the Lewis-Clark State College campus in Lewiston.

The Warrior Entertainment Board is sponsoring the show, which is part of the annual LCSC Welcome Fair, marking the first day of the fall semester at the school.

Author to give two Moscow presentations

MOSCOW - Spokane-based author and tapestry weaver Meghan Nuttall Sayres will give two presentations in Moscow next week.

Sayres will read to children and families at the PCEI Summer Storytime Series at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Palouse-Clearwatre Environmental Institute Nature Center at 1040 Rodeo Drive. She will read from her nonfiction children's book, "The Shape of Betts Meadow," which tells the story of the restoration of wetlands near her home.

The author will speak about her recent visits to Iran at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Moscow Public Library. She will sign copies of her related novel, "Anahita's Woven Riddle." The book was an American Library Association Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults title.

In April Sayres traveled to Iran as the first American to weave on Iran's World Peace Carpet. Copies of her books will be available for purchase. She is also the author of "Weaving Tapestry in Rural Ireland," and "Daughters of the Desert: Tales of Remarkable Women from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim Traditions."

Community members may join LCSC musicians

Community members are invited to join choirs and bands for the Lewis-Clark State College music program's fall semester.

Vocalists are invited to join the LCSC Choir, which performs a variety of concert, jazz, and pop music. Instrumentalists are also welcome to inquire. Individual study is available for guitar, voice, and piano.

Lewiston theater sets auditions for 'Seussical'

The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, and Thing 1 and Thing 2 are a few of the roles available in "Seussical The Musical," the Lewiston Civic Theatre's holiday performance.

Auditions are 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at the theater, and 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Lewiston Community Center, 1424 Main St.

Callbacks, if needed, will be 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at the community center. The show is mostly sung, with no speaking roles. There are roles for ages 7 to adult. The show runs Dec. 3-20 and will be directed by Torry Lewis of Lewiston.

Audition packets may be checked out at the Lewiston Civic Theatre during normal box office hours. The packet will include details on online audition forms, a copy of the script, CD of the songs, and a copy of the score for the song people choose for auditions.

Audition packets must be returned within 24 to 48 hours because of limited copies. Parents with children ages 17 and under in the show will be required to volunteer three or four times to monitor the kids. A sign-up calendar will be at the first rehearsal Sept. 28.

Two contests planned for Harvest Festival

UNIONTOWN - In preparation for its Sept. 19 Harvest Festival, the Artisans at the Dahmen Barn has announced the rules for the event's two contests: hay bale sculpting and pie baking.

Hay bale sculptures will be constructed in the field adjacent to U.S. Highway 195 in Uniontown. Individuals or groups wishing to participate may reserve up to 10 small, rectangular bales no later than Sept. 10. Construction may begin Sept. 12 and must be completed by Sept. 18.

Sculptures must include a securely mounted, weatherproof sign with the entry's title. All embellishments must be provided by contestants. Mechanical entries are encouraged, but there is no access to electricity at the site.

The barn will provide hay bales on a first-come, first-served basis.

The pie baking contest is limited to apple and "apple with a twist," encouraging special flavorings or another fruit combined with apple. No cream or custard pies may be submitted.

Participants must submit two 9- or 10-inch pies to be delivered between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sept. 18 or from 9-10 a.m. Sept. 19.

After three judges evaluate the pie entries, slices of pie a la mode will be sold as a fundraiser for the barn's art center.

Dance school to hold workshop Saturday

MOSCOW - Festival Dance Academy will hold a Celtic dance workshop from 3-6 p.m. Saturday in Studio 110 of the University of Idaho's Physical Education Building.

Attendees must fill out a registration form available online at www.festivaldance.org then call (208) 883-3267 to hold a spot. Registration forms will also be accepted at the door on Saturday. The cost is $10 per person.

Dance instructor Katie Saunders will teach participants traditional Celtic dance steps, including Irish steps, group dances, threes, sevens, skips, walls of Limerick, Humors of Bandon, Waves of Torrey and more.

Moscow commissions bike rack sculptures

MOSCOW - The city of Moscow is commissioning two unusual bicycle rack sculptures to be placed at City Hall and East City Park. The deadline for artist submissions is 5 p.m. next Friday.

The Moscow Bike Rack Committee will select the sculptures. Selected artists will receive $200 per rack.

'Annie Get Your Gun'

PULLMAN - Regional Theatre of the Palouse will present "Annie Get Your Gun" at Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum Aug. 28-30. Advance tickets are on sale.
