UI Jazz Bands, choirs will perform tonight
MOSCOW - The University of Idaho's Jazz bands and choirs will perform a concert at 7:30 tonight.
The event is in the Administration Building auditorium, 851 Campus Drive. Tickets are $5 regular admission, and $3 for students and senior citizens at the door.
Symphony concerts are in Pullman and Lewiston
The Washington Idaho Symphony will present two concerts this weekend featuring Brahms and Shostakovich, under the direction of Jeremy Briggs Roberts.
Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Domey Auditorium at the Gladish Community Center, 115 N.W. State St., in Pullman, and 3 p.m. Sunday at Lewis-Clark State College Activity Center in Lewiston.
The show will include Brahms' Violin Concerto with violinist Maria Sampen, and Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony.
Cost is $18 for general admission and children younger than age 18 are free with a paying adult. Tickets are for sale online at www.washingtonidahosymphony.org or by calling (509) 332-3408.
Chamber music concert is Wednesday in Moscow
MOSCOW - The concert series "Music at St. Mark's" presents chamber music for strings, clarinet, and piano at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
The performance will feature Franz Joseph Haydn's "Allegro ed Innocent, Opus 53," and Olivier Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time," a musical rendering of the "Apocalypse of St. John," Chapter 10.
Musicians are Richard Kriehn, violin; Becky Miller, viola; Mac Cantrell, clarinet; William Wharton, cello; and Chad Spears, piano.
Admission is $15. The church is at 111 S. Jefferson St.
Guitarist to perform twice at WSU Tuesday
PULLMAN - Award-winning guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque will give two performances Tuesday with students and musical groups from the Washington State University School of Music.
At noon, Haque will perform with WSU students in the Compton Union Building. At 8 p.m. he will join WSU's vocal jazz ensemble VoJazz and the WSU Big Band for a performance in Kimbrough Music Hall. Both concerts are free. After the performances, Haque will play at Rico's Pub in downtown Pullman at 10:30 p.m.
Haque plays jazz and classical guitar. He has worked with artists such as Sting, Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito D'Rivera, Dave Holland, Joe Henderson, Kurt Elling and numerous symphony orchestras. Haque has performed all of the major guitar concertos and is an active transcriber of baroque as well as South American music. He is an associate professor in jazz and classical guitar studies at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
WSU Symphonic Band, chamber groups to play
PULLMAN - The Symphonic Band and Student Chamber Music groups will perform Thursday at Washington State University's Bryan Hall Theatre.
The free concert starts at 8 p.m.

Troy gallery holds anniversary exhibit
TROY - The Greymalkin Gallery will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a Spring Anniversary Art Show, which will kick off with an opening reception from 5 to 9 tonight.
The show, which runs through May 1, includes the work of several local artists: John Wilson of Lapwai, David McGranaghan of Troy, Teri Tate of Kendrick, Ruth Root and Patty Ost, both of Orofino, Judith Marvin of Kendrick, Nancy Spink of Moscow, Erin Kandiveli of Troy, and photographers Rick Weidner of Lewiston, Gerry Queener, Bob
McCullough and Sadie Galloway, both of Troy, and Lindsey Boyd of Spokane. Refreshments will be served at the reception.
The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and is at 777 S. Main St. here.
High school exhibit will open in Lewiston
A regional high school art exhibit will open from 4 to 7 tonight at Sage Baking Co. in downtown Lewiston.
The exhibit is presented by Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History and will run through April 30 at the eatery. This is an opportunity for regional high school and junior high school students to display their work in a professional environment.
The exhibition coincides with the Stephan Lyman Children's Dogwood Exhibition on display today through next Friday at the Center for Arts & History Gallery, 721 Seventh Ave., in Lewiston.
The exhibit is open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday with live music. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

Papier-mache artist's works shown in Palouse
PALOUSE - Coeur d'Alene papier-mache artist Rhea Giffin will be the featured artist for April at the Bank Left Gallery here.
The show, displaying Giffin's papier-mache designs, will open with a reception for the artist from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the gallery. The free event will feature live music.
Giffin has been best known for her papier-mache/mixed media sculpture since the birth of her "storybowl" series in 1997. Her collectable works have been exhibited in local galleries and select juried shows across the country. She co-founded and has been the director of The Northwest Papier Mache Artists Guild since 2000.
The gallery will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday for Mom's Weekend at Washington State University. Its hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. It is at 100 S. Bridge St., Palouse.
Watercolor group plans opening of miniatures
MOSCOW - An opening reception for the Palouse Watercolor Socius Miniatures and Small Paintings is tonight.
The event is from 5 to 7 at the Cosgrove State Farm Insurance office located at 318 S. Main St. in Moscow. The show runs through June 11.
Reception is Saturday for CUB gallery exhibit
PULLMAN - "Reinterpreting Reality," an all- women's art exhibit, features a reception at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Washington State University Compton Union Building Gallery.

WSU museum features master's degree exhibit
PULLMAN - The Washington State University Museum of Art, in collaboration with the WSU Fine Arts Department, will present the Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition through May 8 in the WSU Museum of Art.
A free opening reception will begin at 6 tonight in the museum.
This annual showcase represents the culmination of two or more years of work by the Master of Fine Arts graduate candidates. The exhibit will feature works with a wide range of subject matter, content and style.
This year's group of MFA candidates includes Michael Baum, Holly Campbell, Karri Dieken, Colby Jennings, Amber Kovak, Louise Krampien, Scott Phillips, Benjamin Sandness and Garric Simonsen.
The Museum of Art is on Wilson Road, across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU campus. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and is open until 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Beasley Coliseum is site for arts and crafts fair
PULLMAN - The Washington State University Mom's Spring Arts and Crafts Fair is taking place this weekend.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum on the WSU campus. Admission is free.
Concert chorale plans benefit Saturday
MOSCOW - The Idaho Washington Concert Chorale will hold the benefit "Harmony 2010," an evening of wine, cheese and song from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the 1912 Center.
Five wines will be available to sample, along with gourmet cheeses and hors d'oeuvres. A live jazz combo will perform all evening and there will be a silent auction.
The chorale is a nonprofit, auditioned community group of about 70 singers. Its artistic and music director is Michael Murphy, also a professor of choral music at University of Idaho.

BYU professor to intro film, give lecture at LCSC
Douglas Weatherford, an associate professor in Spanish and Portuguese at Brigham Young University, will introduce the 1956 film "La Escondida" and also will lecture on Mexico's independence Wednesday and Thursday on the Lewis-Clark State College campus.
Weatherford will introduce the film, which begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Weatherford will then lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday on "Remembering the Revolution: The Mid-Century Encounter of Gabriel Figueroa and Juan Rulfo and Mexico's Search for National Identity." Both events are in Room 100 of Meriwether Lewis Hall and admission is free.
The film was directed by Robert Gavaldon and takes place during the 1910 Mexican Revolution.
During Weatherford's lecture, he will discuss the film and will look at Figueroa and Rulfo's contributions to Mexico's revolutionary past.
Dinner theater is Saturday at Pataha mill
PATAHA - The Garfield County Hospital District will present the dinner theater production "The Revenge of the Rushmore Girls," Saturday at the Pataha Flour Mill near Pomeroy.
The dinner play begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is by donation but reservations must be made by calling (509) 843-3799. The mill is at 50 Hutchens Hill Road.

Famed 'Orchid Thief' author to read at UI
MOSCOW - Susan Orlean, author of the award-winning, New York Times bestseller "The Orchid Thief," which was made into the film "Adaptation," will read at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Idaho College of Law Courtroom.
Orlean is a staff writer for the New Yorker and author of "The Bullfighter Checks her Makeup," "My Kind of Place" and "Lazy Little Loafers." Orlean is a Distinguished Visiting Writer at UI for a week.
The courtroom is at 711 Rayburn St.
Poet to read, sign books at WSU Thursday
PULLMAN - Poet and performance artist Anne Waldman will give a reading and book signing Thursday on the Washington State University campus.
The free event is at 7:30 p.m. in Kimbrough Music Building, Room 101.
Waldman is the author of more than 40 books of poetry, and cultural and political activist.
She, along with Alan Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, founded the School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder, Colo., where she is the artistic director of the summer writing program.

Woodworking artist to teach Uniontown class
UNIONTOWN - Artisans at the Dahmen Barn resident artist Len Zeoli is offering wood-turning classes.
Classes will begin May 1 and a demonstration is planned from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 25 at his studio in the barn. There will be eight woodworking topics covered during classes taking place through fall at his home. Classes are limited to four participants for each class and materials will be provided. Cost for each class will vary. The first class in the series is introduction to bowl turning from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 1. Registration for each class must be completed by the Monday preceding the class, which for the first class will be April 26. Class cost is $95, and it will be offered again July 5 and 10, and Sept. 11.
Works accepted for annual Grangeville show
GRANGEVILLE - Artists are invited to submit work for the Central Idaho Art Association's 43rd annual Spring Art Show taking place April 29, 30 and May 1 at the Basement Gallery of the Historical Museum at 305 N. College St.
All artists are invited to a no-host lunch and meeting 11:30 a.m. April 27 at Oscars Restaurant, 101 E. Main St. Entries will be accepted from 1:30 to 7 p.m. April 27 at the Basement Gallery. All entering artists and guests are invited to the judges' critique and a covered-dish dinner at 6 p.m. April 28. The show will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 29, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 30, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 1, when art will be picked up.
Raffle tickets for an original painting donated by Ellamae Holes will be available from any association member and at the show. The drawing will take place at 4 p.m. April 29.

Class on making stone tools offered at Dahmen
UNIONTOWN - A class on making stone tools for ages 16 and older is planned for May 1 at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn here.
The flint knapping class is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be taught by Jim Cooper of Palouse. Students will work down a piece of rock into a functional item such as a knife, arrowhead or spear point. Additional facts about rocks and their cutting or shaping capabilities will be shared.
Cooper teaches modern copper and traditional aboriginal techniques. The cost of the class is $50 and includes tools and materials.
