On April 24, 1995, the final bomb linked to the Unabomber exploded inside the Sacramento, Calif., offices of a lobbying group for the wood products industry, killing chief lobbyist Gilbert B. Murray. (Theodore Kaczynski was later sentenced to four lifetimes in prison for a series of bombings that killed three people and injured 29 others.)

In 1877, federal troops were ordered out of New Orleans, ending the North’s post-Civil War rule in the South.

In 1915, in what’s considered the start of the Armenian genocide, the Ottoman Empire began rounding up Armenian political and cultural leaders in Constantinople.

In 1960, rioting erupted in Biloxi, Miss., after Black protesters staging a “wade-in” at a whites-only beach were attacked by a crowd of hostile white people.

In 1961, in the wake of the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, the White House issued a statement saying President John F. Kennedy “bears sole responsibility for the events of the past few days.”

In 1962, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology achieved the first satellite relay of a television signal, between Camp Parks, Calif., and Westford, Mass.

Local history

On this day in 1940, the tug “M. V. Keith” and a 350,000-gallon capacity barge arrived from Umatilla, Ore., demonstrating the feasibility of shipping gasoline and oil to Lewiston by means of the Snake River. The barge carried 10,000 gallons of gasoline, several tons of oil in drums and other petroleum products. On the return trip, it carried 200 tons of wheat bound for Portland. Films of the arrival are among the oldest surviving footage of the city.
