SILVERDALE, Wash. - A Kitsap County sheriff's spokesman said a 5-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was attacked by two Rottweiler dogs at a home in Silverdale, Wash.

Deputy Scott Wilson said the child suffered serious bite wounds to the neck and head Tuesday. He was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Wilson said the child's mother was caring for the dogs as a favor to an ex-boyfriend. The deputy said the boy was playing with one dog outside the house when the dog started biting the child. The second dog joined in the attack. The boy's mother tried unsuccessfully to pull the dogs off, then covered the child with her body, getting bitten herself in the process. Wilson said another relative came outside and helped rescue the child.

The deputy said the two dogs, as well as a third dog that was not involved, have been turned over to Kitsap Animal Rescue.

A Harborview spokesperson did not immediately return a call for information on the boy's condition.
