Cottonwood figured prominently in Patricia and Gov. Dirk Kempthorne's Brightest Stars Awards, announced recently in Boise.

The awards recognize people, organizations and businesses that better the lives of Idaho families and children.

St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood won a grand prize in the business category for offering uncompensated medical care, classes and programs to area residents.

Kelby Wilson of Cottonwood was included in the individual category for his participation in community, school and church groups.

And the Cottonwood Lions Club was named in the organization category for its projects, including a veterans memorial, bike path repair and helping build a helicopter pad at St. Mary's Hospital.

Other awards in north central Idaho went to:

Snake River Clinic of Lewiston, an all-volunteer organization that provides free medical services to residents.

Fingerprints Learning Center of Lewiston won in the business category for sponsoring a food drive and providing space to other groups.

Marci Lynn Schreiber of Moscow was cited for her volunteer efforts and as director of the Young Children and Family Programs of the Palouse, which also was named in the organization category.
