NEZPERCE - A hiker in Lewis County recently discovered human remains in Six Mile Canyon, according to a news release issued Saturday by Lewis County Sheriff Jason Davis.
The hiker notified the sheriff's office about the discovery Nov. 30, and another search was conducted Friday. The remains appear to be "weathered and aged," the sheriff said.
Forensic athropologists and dental specialists will analyze the remains to determine age, gender, race and physical characteristics to help identify the person, Davis said. More information will be released as it becomes available.
On the day of the report, the sheriff's office and Idaho State Police located the remains with the assistance of the hiker.
Because of steep terrain, large rocks and thick underbrush in the canyon, another search was conducted with Lewis County Search and Rescue, the human remains detection K9 unit, Latah County's K9 unit, Nez Perce County Search and Rescue, an ISP drone, U.S. Forest Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Nez Perce Tribal Police Department.
Davis said the only confirmed human remains were those recovered after the initial report.
