OLYMPIA - Saying Gov. Jay Inslee was "deeply saddened" by the deaths of three firefighters in the Methow Valley Aug. 19, his office announced the lowering of all Washington and United States flags over state facilities.

The lowering to half staff was directed for Sunday, the day Richard Wheeler, 31, Andrew Zajac, 26, and Tom Zbyszewski, 20, are to be remembered in a Wenatchee memorial service. However, the governor's office said in a press release there is "no objection to agencies lowering the flags at the close of business Friday."

The three men were killed when their vehicle crashed and fire overtook them as they battled the Twisp River Fire, a part of the Okanogan Complex. Fellow firefighter Daniel Lyon, 25, was badly burned in the incident and remains hospitalized.

The memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Town Toyota Center, 1300 Walla Walla Ave. The public will be seated as space allows, once the families of firefighters and fellow fire personnel have taken their seats.

Memorial organizers said additional details will be posted as they're finalized at twispriverfirememorial.blogspot.com. The site includes information on where to make donations in honor of the firefighters.

Flags at state facilities will return to full staff either at close of business or sunset Sunday, or Monday morning. Flags at U.S. Forest Service facilities will also remain at half staff during the memorial period.
