Wartime veterans of Clarkston and the surrounding area have a new outlet to serve the community.

The American Legion is starting a new post in Clarkston. Organizers were in town this week to sign up members and help set up the post.

At a membership booth outside Albertson's store Wednesday, district representatives signed up more than enough members to begin a post. At least 15 veterans are required, according to American Legion bylaws.

The new post will meet at the county library beginning the end of August until a permanent meeting site is found.

"Service. That's what the American Legion is all about," said Jim Angell, commander for Washington. "Clarkston is an ideal place to start a partnership between the American Legion and the community.

"The people here care about their community and practice good citizenship everyday. Now, wartime veterans have a special place from which they can make a difference."
