Nov. 19
On this day in 1883, a major fire broke out on First Street.
The actions of the fire brigade proved controversial.
Some local residents urged volunteer firefighters to delay their efforts.
The affected buildings were in Lewiston's Chinatown. By the time firefighters did act, the blaze had grown into a conflagration that eventually consumed Lot Wiggin's blacksmith shop, the Chinese temple and the homes of 14 families.
