Capt. Luke C. Wullenwaber was killed in action in 2004 in Khaladiyah, Iraq, while he was conducting a security mission.

An improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle.

He had volunteered for the mission to give an enlisted man the day off.

A member of Lewiston High School's Class of 1999, Wullenwaber graduated in 2002 with academic honors from the Virginia Military Academy and also was a Distinguished Military Graduate.

He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Wullenwaber was the first Lewiston soldier to die in combat since Dec. 29, 1968, when Sgt. James Edward Boggess was killed in action in Vietnam.
