A mandatory recount didn't change the outcome of the 9th Legislative District primary race, confirming that former Franklin County Sheriff Richard Lathim came in second.
Lathim will advance to the Nov. 3 general election, where he'll face incumbent state Rep. Mary Dye, R-Pomeroy.
Dye, who was appointed to the seat in May after former Rep. Susan Fagan of Pullman resigned, received 9,132 votes in the Aug. 4 primary, or 48 percent of the vote. Lathim received 4,899 votes and 26 percent. That was just 47 more votes than the third-place finisher, Othello Democrat Ken Caylor.
Given the margin between Lathim and Caylor was less than 0.5 percent, a recount was required. However, none of the results throughout the six-county district changed. The district represents a large section of eastern Washington, including Asotin, Garfield and Whitman counties.
The winner in November's election will serve the remaining year of Fagan's term in the Legislature.
Lewiston police warn of door-to-door sellers
A group of juveniles or young adults have been going door to door in the Lewiston area trying to sell cleaning products without a solicitor's license, according to Lewiston police.
Lewiston Police Sgt. Jeff Klone is advising residents to be wary of who they let into their home.
"If you don't know the person at the door, don't answer it," Klone said.
Klone said residents should remain cautious. Any door-to-door solicitor is required to carry a valid solicitor's license. Klone said residents have a right to ask to see that license.
