Sleep Country U.S.A. will soon begin constructing a 5,000-square-foot store at Fifth and Fair streets on property that's part of the Clarkston Walmart development.

The retailer will open in late August, said Gina Davis, a spokeswoman for the company in Kent, Wash.

"The plans have been submitted and reviewed, and we're ready to issue a building permit any time," said James Martin, Clarkston's public works director.

The building permit will show the estimated value of the project as $600,000, Martin said.

Sleep Country U.S.A. is a Northwest chain with more than 70 stores in Washington, Idaho and Oregon, including one in Lewiston, which will remain open after the addition of the Clarkston location, Davis said.

Typically, Sleep Country stores have a staff of three or four employees and carry 40 to 50 models of mattresses, Davis said.

Sleep Country entered the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley market about two years ago when it acquired 14 Mattress Outlet stores. Mattress Outlet opened in 2005 at 102 Thain Road, Suite B, in Lewiston, in a complex that was kitty-corner from Walmart before the world's largest retailer closed that store in 2009 and moved to its present super center in Clarkston.

The Clarkston Sleep Country building will occupy one of four lots adjacent to the Walmart parking lot. One has been filled by a professional complex where Scott Arnone, a financial adviser and regional leader for Edward Jones, has his offices.

Two others are still for sale with list prices of $400,000 and $375,000, according to the Walmart real estate website. Those properties are west of where Sleep Country will locate along Fair Street.
