Commission to discuss sale of jail property

Sale of property purchased by Nez Perce County for construction of a new jail will be discussed at a special meeting at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brammer Building, 1225 Idaho St. in Lewiston.

The property is near New Sixth Street on the south side of F Street beneath the bluff. It was purchased about 1989 in hope of building a new jail there. Voters rejected a bond issue for construction, however.

At the county's regular agenda session at 1:30 p.m. Monday, items include amending the Nez Perce County Fire Protection District to create areas of representation within the district to allow appointment of commissioners.

The appointment of Kim Morlan, a building contractor, to represent the area of city impact within the county will be considered. Morlan would succeed John Mock, who has resigned.

A resolution regarding pollution control bonds and leases with Helen M. Hinrich, Homer H. Jones and Ray E. Jones to allow gravel to be stockpiled on their property also will be discussed.

Methods of control and effects of non-compliance are among the issues on the agenda.

An appeal from William A. Scharnhorst of the code enforcement officer's ruling that conditions of a non-conforming use are being violated at 1713 13th Ave. will be heard at the evening council meeting. At issue are the size of a sign and the display of golf carts outside the business.

The evening meeting starts at 7 p.m., also at city hall.

Also on the agenda is a proposal to place an additional restriction on a conditional use permit for a nursing home at 325 Warner Drive. The new restriction would limit access on the northeast corner of the property on Fourth Street to service and emergency vehicles.

The city manager will report on parking enforcement on Normal Hill, and a public hearing will be set for Feb. 26 on a request by David Peterson to vacate right of way on the 1600 block of Fifth Street north of South Way.
