NEZPERCE - Nine attorneys have applied for the Lewis County magistrate position currently held by Judge Stephen L. Calhoun.
The applicants include: Daren Fales, a private practice attorney in Grangeville; Lewis County Prosecutor Zachary Pall; Clearwater County Deputy Prosecutor Lori Gilmore; Idaho County Public Defender Victoria Olds; Samuel Beus, senior public defender in Twin Falls; David Gabert, a private practice attorney in Mackay, Idaho; Craig Stevely, Ada County public defender; Jay Sturgell, Kootenai County court assistance officer; and Gregory Swanson, Canyon County deputy prosecuting attorney.
The Idaho Supreme Court will launch a survey of attorneys statewide beginning Friday and concluding Aug. 26. During this period, the public also can make comments and forms are available from courthouses within the 2nd Judicial District or online at: http://sjdc.isc.idaho.gov.
Following the comment period, the 2nd Judicial Magistrate Commission will schedule interviews for the candidates, which will be open to the public.
Calhoun, 70, has announced plans to retire from the position he has held for nearly 30 years when his term ends Jan. 6.
