Area wildfires still far from contained, remain dangerous depending on weather conditions
CHELSEA EMBREE of the Tribune

Area wildfires Monday saw another day of minimal activity.

Smoky skies and cooler temperatures prevented the spread of regional blazes. And with similar conditions expected today, the outlook is good for firefighting efforts.

A Type 1 incident management team took over authority of the newly dubbed Selway Complex, which consists of the Baldy Fire near Newsome and the Wash Fire nine miles northeast of Elk City. The Wash Fire was originally included in the Motorway Complex near Syringa.

The Baldy Fire was estimated at 1,350 acres Monday, and the Wash Fire reached 24,066 acres. Only the Baldy Fire reached any level of containment, at 1 percent.

Elk City remains under Stage 1 evacuations, meaning residents should be on alert. A community meeting on the fire is set for 5 p.m. today in Elk City Alliance Park.

Crews made progress Monday on the Grizzly Bear Complex burning in the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness 15 miles from Anatone. Public information officer Paul Ries said bucket drops on the south side of the fire helped reinforce containment lines.

Little fire activity was reported Monday, as there was "no wind to speak of," Ries said.

The complex has burned about 65,500 acres and has no containment level.

Stage 3 mandatory evacuations remain in place for the Troy, Ore., area and the Grouse Flats area west to State Route 129. Stage 2 evacuations, meaning residents should be prepared to leave at a moment's notice, are still in place for the Flora, Ore., area and much of Asotin County, including Anatone. The city of Asotin is under a Stage 1 evacuation alert.

A Red Cross shelter for residents affected by the Grizzly Bear Complex is located at Enterprise High School at 201 S.E. Fourth St. in Enterprise, Ore.

The Motorway Complex near Syringa also saw minimal activity Monday.

"Fires have been relatively quiet, still, with the smoke conditions," said public information officer Michelle Kelly.

No air operations were conducted Monday because of limited visibility that's expected to continue today.

The total size of the complex is 29,604 acres with 2 percent containment.

Stage 2 evacuations are in place for Syringa and Smith Creek Road. Stage 1 evacuations are in place for the Lowell area.

As wildfires near Kamiah and Orofino continue the long process of winding down, the affected communities are starting to look toward recovery.

The Idaho Department of Insurance has set up a website specifically for fire claims. It will include fact sheets about filing insurance claims and contact information for insurance companies. The site is at www.doi.idaho.gov/consumer/disaster.aspx.

The Red Cross' Multi-Agency Resource Center, a so-called "one-stop shop" for casework and assistance, is also set to open today at the American Legion Center in Kamiah.

The Clearwater Complex near Kamiah has burned 45,973 acres and is at 45 percent containment.

"It's been good as far as making good progress on mop-up operations around the fire," said public information officer Russell Hubright.

In Clearwater County, the only evacuations still in place Monday were Stage 2 evacuations for Lolo Creek Road to Hidden Valley Lane and Stage 1 evacuations for Three Mile and Four Mile roads.

Orofino's Municipal Complex saw no growth Monday, holding at 23,483 acres and 80 percent containment. Reubens remains under Stage 2 evacuations.

The goal on the fire is to establish fire lines that are 200 feet wide around the perimeter of the fire, public information officer Jon Anderson said.

"Crews are basically just working very hard in the areas along the fire line that are holding the heat on all three of those (fires)," he said.
