In what may be the final 100-degree day of the year, thermometers in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley topped triple digits with a high of 102 degrees on Thursday.
The triple-digit reading was the ninth 100-degree or hotter day this year, but forecasts for the next 10 days are calling for a cooling trend, with temperatures expected to reach 98 degrees today but dropping to the low 90s and upper 80s over the weekend.
Thursday's reading of 102 degrees fell just short of the record temperature of 104 degrees set in 1977. The low temperature record for Aug. 20 is 46 degrees, set in 1952.
The number of triple-digit days in a typical Lewiston-Clarkston summer ranges from seven (in 2002) to 16 (in 2003).
In 2008, Lewiston had 10 triple-digit days, with two in June, one in July and seven in August.
This year, there were no 100-degree days in June, two in July and seven in August.
