POMEROY — A Pomeroy man and woman are facing child assault charges after allegedly causing multiple extensive injuries to a 3-month-old infant.
Daymn Ward, 20, and Gracie C. Dansereau, 21, made their first appearance Tuesday in Garfield County Superior Court, where bond was set at $50,000 for each defendant. They will be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 4.
According to court documents, Ward is charged with four counts of first-degree assault of a child, a Class A felony, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. Dansereau is charged with three counts of first-degree assault of a child and failure to report child abuse, a gross misdemeanor.
On Saturday, the baby was flown to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center for treatment, and Spokane detectives and a major crimes unit began investigating the alleged abuse, which reportedly occurred in Garfield County, according to the probable-cause affidavit.
A critical care pediatric physician told police the baby had swelling and bleeding in his brain, multiple bones in both legs were likely broken, and he had swelling and damage to one of his hands, court documents said. The physician reportedly said he was sure this trauma was caused by abuse.
The infant’s “head-to-toe” injuries listed in court documents also included two broken clavicles, black and blue testicles and a strange bruise to the middle of the back.
According to the probable-cause affidavit, Ward and Dansereau allegedly both admitted to “extensive, ongoing abuse” of the infant during police interviews.
Ward is represented by attorney Julie Karl and Dansereau is represented by attorney Nick Ward. Prosecutor Matt Newberg is handling the case for the state.
