"Life creates paths to love" - J. Harkins

Jeffrey Lynn Harkins, Ph.D., of Moscow died Nov. 26, 2013, at age 67.

Jeff was born Oct. 30, 1946. His parents were John Hamilton Harkins and Dorothy Irene Harkins. Jeff received his bachelor's and master's degrees at University of Texas Arlington and his doctorate at the University of Washington. He was married to Deborah Frincke, Ph.D., on Aug. 22, 1998.

He worked as accounting faculty at both Washington State University and the University of Idaho. He served as accounting chairman for the University of Idaho College of Business, retiring emeritus in 2010. Among his accomplishments were publishing a scholarly business journal, coaching and refereeing girls and junior varsity soccer, serving in state and local politics, and volunteering for the Moscow Rotary Club, the Moscow Elks Lodge and the Moscow Lions Club, where he was president. He was a devoted husband, lifelong teacher and learner, avid gardener, builder, hobbyist, golfer, scuba diver, sailor, pilot and travel enthusiast. He loved the wilderness and living creatures both tame and wild.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Frincke of Laurel, Md.; sister Pam Nelms and her husband, Rick Nelms, of Dallas; daughter Katie Harkins of Seattle; foster daughter Clara Schemmer of Portland, Ore.; and several nieces and grand-nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, Jeff and family request donations be made to the Lions Foundation in Moscow or the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge in Laurel.

A celebration of Jeff's life will be held in early 2014 in Moscow and will be announced at a later date.
