Lu Ellen Scott Cox, age 90, passed on to her heavenly reward Friday, July 4, 2008, in her home at Juniper Meadows with her loving husband and family gathered at her side.
Lu Ellen was born in Davis City, Iowa, Sept. 1, 1917, to Erald and Una Scott. After high school she attended Graceland College in Lamona, Iowa, for two years and then completed her bachelor's degree in home economics at Iowa State University, where she met her future husband, Royce Cox.
She and Royce were married at Lewiston in 1940. They lived in Orofino and Headquarters before settling in the Lewiston Orchards in 1948. They had four children, David, Janet, Barbara and Stephen. Stephen and Barbara preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband, Royce, at Juniper Meadows; son and daughter-in-law David and Linda Cox of Sisters, Ore.; daughter, Jan Vierck and partner Susan Troyano of Lewiston; and her three brothers, John and wife Anita Scott of Lewiston, and Julian and wife Beverly Scott, and Ronald and wife Barbara Scott, all of Portland, Ore.
Lu Ellen was much beloved by many people in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley for her longstanding volunteer work and was an inspiration to her family and friends. She was very active in the community and especially at the Lewiston Orchards United Methodist Church. She belonged to Eastern Star, Job's Daughters, PEO, and the Lewiston Garden Club. She thoroughly enjoyed her volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, Hospice, Interlink and Planned Parenthood, and for many years used her home economic skills as a judge at the Nez Perce County Fair. And of course, there was always time for a game of bridge with her dear friends.
Her husband; children; four grandchildren, Kymberly Vierck Frost, Melissa Cox Jarrett, Michael Cox and Todd Vierck; and seven great-grandchildren were the greatest joys of her life, and to "Mama Lu" family was everything. They all miss her dearly.
The loving staff and caregivers at Juniper Meadows and St. Joseph Family Hospice were Mom's angels in the final months of her life, and her family is so grateful for their care and support.
The family suggests that memorial gifts may be made to the Lewiston Orchards United Methodist Church or St. Joseph Family Hospice.
Lu Ellen's life will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the Orchards United Methodist Church.
Mountain View Funeral Home in Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.
