Patrick Wayne Purcell, 91, died March 8, 2013, at Royal Plaza nursing facility.
Patrick was born Jan. 19, 1922, on a ranch in the Heaton Gulch area of Garfield County to John A. and Mary Landkammer Purcell. Pat was the 11th child of this family.
Pat attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1942. Pat played football during his high school years. He lived one year with his sister in Kansas and attended school there and learned to play the violin, carrying on the tradition of music in the Purcell family.
Pat was a technical sergeant and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific, including the Philippines and Japan, and was honorably discharged at the end of the war. He later lived and worked for Earl and Mae Kuhn on their ranch near Pomeroy for three years. He then moved to Lewiston and worked for Potlatch Corp. until his retirement.
After retiring from Potlatch Corp., Pat worked for Asotin County Quality Behavioral Services.
Patrick Wayne Purcell and Dorothy Ruth Monell Hawkins were married Nov. 4, 1957, at Asotin.
Pat enjoyed the outdoors. He took his family camping, fishing and hunting in the woods of northern Idaho. Pat and Dorothy were camp hosts at many Idaho and Washington state parks. They built a cabin at Waha and spent many summers there with their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed hiking, fishing and snowmobiling.
In 2010, he was able to get the chance to go on an honor flight that was sponsored by Jenifer Junior High School.
Surviving children are Paul Purcell of Clarkston, Ruth Carpenter of Lewiston, Keith Hawkins of Asotin and Donna Strickler of Clarkston; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his three sisters, Mae Kuhn and Betty Waldher of Clarkston and Lucille Bauer of Tooele, Utah. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Genida Purcell of College Place, Wash., and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Monell Purcell; parents; brothers Frank, John, Arthur, Thomas and Ray; and sisters Gertrude Schuelke, Ellen Eastman, Marie Mathewson and Rose Richmond.
Viewing is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston. A funeral is at 2 p.m. Wednesday at All Saints Catholic Parish, St. Stanislaus Church.
