Lowering the bar

President Donald Trump has debased the Constitution. Trump has debased the presidency. Trump has debased the family. Trump has debased prostitution and the porn industry. Trump has debased science. Trump has debased thoughtful discussion. Trump has debased America. Let's admit it: Trump has debased us.

Disappointing but perhaps of no surprise is that when the Republican candidates who want to represent Idahoans from the 1st Congressional District squared off in an Idaho Public Television debate, most tried to sound like Trump, swore their allegiance to Trump and scurried like rats for orts dropped on the floor by this president, who they called "unconventional."

Unconventional?

No. Unfit.

The saddest aspect of the debate was that with Trump lowering the bar on what we expect from politicians, the House candidates took it as a challenge to see who could limbo lowest under the Trump standard.

I am pretty sure what it says about the House politicians' views of us in Idaho's 1st District.

Wouldn't it be nice to find a statesman (woman) who wants to Make America Great Again instead of being another swamp rat?

Maybe we'll find a moral Republican, a Democrat, an independent, a Libertarian, a member of the Constitution Party or even a Green Party member?

Happy with the paper

I have been a subscriber for decades and it seems at least once a year someone gets upset over an opinion or picture and demands cancellation, thereby cutting off his or her nose to spite, etc.

Every time I see such a letter, I feel pretty sure those people will "re-up" as soon as they start to miss the news and entertainment we wake up to daily.

Also, I'm happy with my carrier. My paper is always on the porch; sometimes leaning against the door. That's why I include a tip with my payment. I hope everyone does that. Good service deserves it, right?

Once in a while, there's a letter accusing the Tribune of political bias, but I have never found evidence of that; and believe me: I would know.

The person who chooses the daily comics has done a great job. The artwork is good, the print is legible and the topics are funny or ironic, except for "Breaking Cat News." I just skip over that one. What happened to "Phoebe and her Unicorn?"

I really shouldn't write letters when I haven't slept well. But I do appreciate the editor's correcting my punctuation and spelling. It makes me appear well-rested.

Send hunger packing.

The Lewis-Clark State College Art of Giving Committee would like to thank everyone in the community who contributed to the Sixth Annual Art of Giving-Send Hunger Packing food drive.

As a result of the community food drive and the Art of Giving during Art Under the Elms, more than 1,290 pounds of food and $904 in cash donations were collected. The food and monetary donations are being divided between the Asotin Food Bank, the Community Action Partnership Food Bank, the ROC, St. Vincent de Paul, the Warrior Food Pantry and the YWCA.

The success of the drive is the result of the generosity of the community and the hard work of students, staff and faculty, including the Anthropology Club, the ASLCSC Student Government, LCSC Ambassador Honor Society, International Programs, LCSC Political Science Club, Student Organization of Social Workers, LC Work Scholars and AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteers.

The Social Work club also won the can sculpture contest this year by receiving the most donations for the drive. We appreciate everyone's support and thoughtfulness. See you next year.
