Salmon sculpture to be unveiled Saturday at North Lewiston park

City officials and board members from Idaho Rivers United will dedicate a salmon sculpture at Steelhead Park in North Lewiston at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The sculpture by Cottonwood artist Dennis J. Sullivan was donated by LuVerne Grussing, of Arrow, and installed at the popular boat ramp last year as a reminder to residents and visitors of how important anadromous fish are to the culture, economy and ecology of the region.

Steelhead Park is on the banks of the Clearwater River just off U.S. Highway 95/12.

Lewiston man will discuss rafting wild rivers in Alaska and Canada

Clyde Nicely, of Lewiston, will speak about rafting wild rivers in Alaska and the Yukon Territory of Canada at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Unity of Clearwater Valley Church in Lewiston.

The presentation will detail trips on the Tatshenshini and Alsek rivers and on the Kongakut River. The Tatshenshini begins in the Yukon Territory, crosses British Columbia and joins the Alsek before entering Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park. The journey is considered by many to be the most visually spectacular river trip in North America.

The Kongakut flows through the Brooks Range in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Above the Arctic Circle and the treeline, it teems with amazing vistas and wildlife.

Nicely’s talk will include pictures from both trips. The presentation serves as a fundraiser to repair the roof of the church at 1622 15th Ave. in Lewiston and a $10 cash or check donation is requested of those who attend.
