RIRIE, Idaho - State biologists say a predatory fish species found in the Ririe Reservoir is an unwelcome surprise and that anglers may be to blame.
Idaho Department of Fish and Game biologists say they snared two walleye in the eastern Idaho reservoir two weeks ago. The agency has never stocked the fish there, leaving biologists to conclude the aggressive fish were illegally released.
Regional fisheries manager Dan Garren says the fish could pose a threat to other species across the drainage, including Yellowstone cutthroat trout.
So far, biologists have no idea how prevalent walleye are in the lake or whether the species has spawned. But Garren says the agency will keep close tabs on the situation.
