PULLMAN - Cody O'Connell repeated as Walter Camp All-American, and this time he brought a Washington State teammate.
Hercules Mata'afa joined O'Connell on the first unit Thursday as the 2017 version of the granddaddy of football All-America teams was announced.
Maybe it's no coincidence. Those two Cougars routinely scrap against each other in practice - O'Connell as an offensive guard and Mata'afa as a defensive tackle. They've been making each other better all season.
Also on Thursday, Mata'afa was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in the Associated Press All-Pac-12 honors. Plus, Mata'afa and O'Connell made the first unit of TheAthletic.com All-America team, and Mata'afa drew the same honor on the SI.com version.
Mata'afa is the first Cougar defensive player to earn All-America honors since Deone Bucannon in 2013.
O'Connell was a unanimous All-American last season, and is the first Cougar to earn All-America first-team honors in multiple seasons since kicker Jason Hanson (1989 and 1991). He's the first WSU player to earn first-team honors in consecutive seasons since running back Rueben Mayes (1984-85).
The Cougars on the AP All-Pac-12 team were first-team picks O'Connell, offensive lineman Cole Madison, Mata'afa and safety Jalen Thompson. Second-team selections were wide receiver Tavares Martin Jr. and kicker Erik Powell.
Warriors add runner
Lewis-Clark State's track and cross country teams jointly signed Maja Plaznik on Thursday. She hails from Ljubljana, Slovenia, and comes to the Warriors on the recommendation of one of L-C coach Mike Collins' trusted colleagues.
"She comes to us highly recommended by Mike Hinz," Collins said of Pullman High's coach, who has a long-time involvement with USA running at the national level. "When he says she is a good one, my ears perk up."
Plaznik's numbers already impress. She has run a 4.1K in less than 15 minutes in addition to logging a 2:14 time in the 800 meters and 58 seconds in the 400.
"Maja will come in and have an immediate impact on what we are doing here," Collins said.

Sherrell finished second this year at the junior championship of the Pacific Northwest Junior Golf Association.
