PROVO, Utah - Brandon Relf homered in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Brigham Young a 3-2 victory over Washington State in a nonconference baseball game Monday.

Relf's game-winner came off WSU reliever Connor Lambert (1-1). The second of three Brigham Young pitchers, Chris Capper, recorded the final out of the eighth inning and earned the victory. David McKnight pitched the ninth inning for his fifth save.

Washington State (15-10) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Derek Jones home run, but BYU (13-14) scored twice in the sixth inning.

Shea Vucinich of the Cougars reached on an error with one out in the top of the eighth and Brady Steiger plated him with a two-out, pinch-hit single to tie the game.

The series concludes today with a game scheduled to begin at noon.

Cougars make academic team

PULLMAN - Melissa Bogert of Washington State was named to the first unit of the Pac-10 all-academic team in women's swimming Monday.

Jennifer Dean and Talor Whitaker of the Cougars made the second unit. Honorable mentions for WSU were Michaela Ahlin, Jessie Craig, Andrea Emde and Rachael Krager.
