PULLMAN - Backups got a chance to shine Friday in Washington State's second scrimmage of spring football workouts.

No. 2 quarterback Gary Rogers threw two touchdown passes and reserve tailback Kevin McCall rushed for 98 yards.

"We got a little better today," coach Bill Doba said. "We emphasized the run in this scrimmage and we ran the ball a little bit better. We threw the ball and gave Gary (Rogers) a lot of reps, so that was good."

McCall opened the scoring with a 42-yard run, and freshman Marcus Richmond finished with 50 ground yards. Starting tailback Dwight Tardy carried four times on 11 yards.

The Cougars' third and final scrimmage of the spring will be April 14 at 1:15 p.m. at Martin Stadium.

Rushing - Kevin McCall 16/98 (TD), Marcus Richmond 13/50, Dwight Tardy 4/11.
