PALOUSE - The Garfield-Palouse boys' basketball team hasn't quite completed its first tour of the Southeast 1B League, but the Vikings seemed to establish themselves as the league frontrunner with a 21-point win over Pomeroy.
After a tight first quarter, Gar-Pal, which was ranked fifth in the most recent Washington Class 1B rankings, outscored second-ranked Pomeroy by 14 points in the second period to dispatch Pomeroy 67-46 on Saturday night.
"The kids relaxed and kind of blew it open," Vikings coach Tim Coles said of the second quarter. "We got a few turnovers and a few fast breaks, and the kids worked the ball well and took it to the bucket."
Gar-Pal's well-rounded performance included 18 points and eight rebounds from Tyler Thurman, 15 points, seven steals and four assists from Matt Holbrook and 10 points from Gabe Cocking.
Pomeroy (10-2, 5-1) got 14 points from Tyson Feider.

"It would have been nice to get a few more shots than we did," Asotin coach Seth Paine said. "We kinda came up on the short end of the stick."
Danny Daily and Koby Blunt had six rebounds for the Panthers, who were led in rebounding by Dane Slaybaugh with five.

GARDEN VALLEY, Idaho - Freshman Devan Brandstetter and teammate Alex Diaz scored 19 points each for the Salmon River Savages, who defeated the Wolverines in a Long Pin Conference matchup.
"We shot the ball really well from the start," Salmon River coach Charlie Shepherd said. "It was just an outstanding game offensively."
Jimmy Shepherd had six rebounds, six assists and five steals for the Savages, while teammates Riley Travis had six rebounds and Tucker Boyd had six assists.
"We kept Yearsley to 12 points," coach Shepherd said of Michael Yearsley, one of the league's offensive leaders. "That's exceptional defense on our part."

COLTON - Colton methodically built a big lead, weathered a second-half swoon and finally regained its balance on its way to a Southeast 1B League win over St. John-Endicott.
The Wildcats (5-5, 4-2), who led by as many as 25 points, saw their edge sliced in half in the second half. But after a timeout, Colton stopped the run with a few scores, coach Jason Shull said.
Carter Dahmen scored 15 points and Austin Meyer added 12. Shull lauded the play for reserves Luke Moore, Peter Schultheis and Nick Schultheis.

"We turned the ball over too many times," said Orofino coach Jeff Wright of his team's hamartia.
After trailing by as many as 21 in the third, Orofino rallied to within five points with three minutes left but "we just didn't give ourselves enough of a chance," said Wright, who lauded his team for continuing to battle the whole way through.

NEZPERCE - The Tigers blitzed the Indians with defensive ease as Wyatt Hardin scored 26 points for Kendrick in a Whitepine League Division II game.
"We started out playing a bit slow," Kendrick coach Morgan LeBlanc said. "Didn't shoot very well offensively, but we played really good defense."
Hardin had seven rebounds and four assists for the Tigers, while teammates Braden Smith and Logan Blair had six steals apiece. Smith added eight assists.

MOSCOW - The Lewiston C team had four players score in double figures as the unbeaten Bengals picked off the Highland varsity in a nonleague game at Memorial Gym.
Lane Grant led Lewiston with 17 points while Grant Mullikin added 12 and Spencer Hunt and Luke White notched 11 apiece.
The Bengals (11-0) raced to a 14-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Huskies from Craigmont rallied to within four, but Lewiston never relinquished the lead.
The game took place around the time of a shooting spree at Moscow. Lewiston C coach Davey Steele said Memorial Gym was put on lockdown, but the game went on without incident.
