SPOKANE -- Unhappy with his team's "defensive energy" the past few games, Clarkston boys' basketball coach Brendan Johnson challenged the Bantams to improve their effort -- from start to finish.

They did just that, holding the East Valley Knights to a mere four first-quarter points en route to a 64-39 Greater Spokane League victory on Tuesday night.

"Our defensive energy was huge tonight," said Johnson, whose team was coming off a 53-49 loss to Central Valley. "We really hit a wall last week against CV."

The difference was apparent from the outset against East Valley, according to Johnson. Clarkston led 17-4 after one quarter and 32-17 at the break.

"We've had some great starts, but we haven't played (that way) beyond the first three or four minutes," Johnson said, "and we did that tonight."

Senior post Josh Heytvelt led Clarkston with 23 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field, and the Bantams also received 15 points from Ryan Turnbow. Johnson also noted solid play from Jared Hopkins, Mike Vogeler and Allen Tucker.
