PULLMAN — Washington State dropped the opening doubles contest and never recovered as it fell to Washington in a Pac-12 women’s tennis match at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Friday.

Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov notched the Cougs only win in No. 3 doubles, a 7-5 decision over Melissa Sakar and Catherine Gagnon.

Washington’s Dariya Detkovskaya and Erika Matsuda notched a 6-4 decision over Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom in No. 2 doubles.

With the match outcome no longer in doubt, the final three matches were all stopped, with all in the third set.

Doubles — Astrid Olsen/Alexia Jacobs, UW, def. Eva Alvarez Sande/Elyse Tse 7-5; Dariya Detkovskaya/Erika Matsuda, UW, def. Yura Nakagawa/Fifa Kumhom 6-4; Hania Abouelsaad/Martina Markov, WSU, def. Melissa Sakar/Catherine Gagnon, 7-5.

Singles — Alexia Jacobs, UW, def . Elyse Tse 6-4, 6-2; Astrid Olsen, UW, def. Yura Nakagawa 6-1, 6-4; Dariya Detkovskaya, UW, def. Martina Markov 7-6 (2), 6-0.

Warriors best Highline in nonscoring event

Lewis-Clark State shut out Highline Community College (Wash.) in a non-team scoring match at the LCSC Tennis Center.

All three doubles teams won by the same 6-1 score.

Gwyn Heim dropped only four games in a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lockhart in No. 1 singles for the Warriors.

WSU wins Fawley Cup

COLTON — Washington State bested Gonzaga to win its 29th Fawley Cup.

The Cougars first varsity eight team of Amy Patten, Jess Schneider, Siena Snow, Fiona Elliott, Eliza Dawson, Ilaria Macchi, Jaeve Proberts and Sydney Wick finished with a time of 6 minutes, 33.24 seconds to beat Gonzaga by about four seconds (6:37.28).

Washington State opened with a loss to Gonzaga in the second varsity four race. The Bulldogs finished with a time of 7.53.00 while the Cougs finished in 8.04.74.

Arizona 8, Washington State 7

TUCSON, Ariz. — Washington State’s Max Hartman and Kyle Russell combined for four RBI in the ninth inning, but No. 21 Arizona was able to fight back and secure the walk-off Pac-12 win at Hi Corbett Field.

Russell notched a two-RBI single to give the Cougars a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

The Wildcats (22-14, 11-15) got a walk-off RBI single from Maddox Mihalakis half an inning later.

Russell led Washington State (18-18, 7-12) with four hits and Joey Kramer had a home run for the Cougars.

Our Lady of the Lake 4, Lewis-Clark State 0

NEW ORLEANS — Lewis-Clark State was bounced by No. 23 Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) in the semifinals of the NAIA unaffiliated group championships in New Orleans.

The Warriors duo of Itaru Kikuchi and Matus Rusnak fell 6-2 to David Ekpenyong and Kyllian Savary in No. 1 doubles.

Rusnak fell 6-2, 6-2 to Savary in No. 1 singles for the Warriors.

The No. 3 singles, No. 5 singles and No. 2 singles contests were called off when Our Lady of the Lake clinched the victory.

Doubles — David Ekpenyong/Kyllian Savary, OLLU, def. Itaru Kirkuchi/Matus Rusnak 6-2; Luis Hernandez/Jaroslav Majsajdr, OLLU, def. Rafael Bonnet de Larbongne/Daniel Tevez 6-3.

Bothwell places ninth in decathlon

La Grande, Ore. — Lewis-Clark State senior Christian Bothwell placed ninth in the decathlon at the Cascade Conference multi-event championship with 3,188 points.

Bothwell finished third in the javelin with a heave of 152 feet. He placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 107-6.

The senior missed most of the outdoor season due to injury and he didn’t compete in the 400 meters, 110 hurdles, pole vault or 1,500 during the two-day event.
