POMEROY - The Colton High girls' basketball team built a big lead in the second quarter, then held Pomeroy at bay the rest of the way Friday night for a 41-33 win in the Southeast 1B League opener for both clubs.
The Wildcats (3-0 overall, 1-0 in league) led by five after the first quarter, then kicked off the second with a 13-0 run to go up 24-6.
Pomeroy (2-1, 0-1) pushed back in the second half, but couldn't get any closer than the final margin.
Colton got 15 points from Emily Schultheis, 13 from Jordyn Moehrle and 12 from Dakota Patchen. Georgia Meyer also tracked down 10 rebounds, and the Wildcats' team defense "was really the key," coach Clark Vining said.
Pomeroy got a big game from Maddy Dixon (20 points, 15 rebounds, three blocks, two assists), and coach Tai Bye was especially pleased with Sydney Smith's defense on Colton sharpshooter Patchen.
"These girls are a force to be reckoned with," Bye said, "... and we can't wait to face Colton again."

SPOKANE VALLEY - Clarkston freshman Ashlyn Wallace tied a school record for 3-pointers made in a single game (7), but the Bantams fell to East Valley.
Wallace - who in her coach, Debbie Sobotta's, words "has a radar for the basket" - finished this Great Northern League contest with 24 points, but the Bantams simply ran into an "athletic and physical" team.
"East Valley just jumped out on us from the beginning...," Sobotta said. "And (it) took us awhile to respond to that. But we did respond, and got the game back within seven points at one point."

SPOKANE VALLEY - The Bantams' Gus Hagestad scored nine points in the second quarter to give Clarkston a double-digit halftime edge, and the visitors extended that lead to as many as 20 before holding off an Eagle rally in a Great Northern League win over East Valley.
Hagestad didn't miss - he went 5-for-5 from the field, and was 3-for-3 at the line for a total of 13 points - and Tru Allen led the Bantams with 21 points. In the fourth quarter, Clarkston's Branton Chatfield scored six of his ten points, including two "big dunks," in coach Justin Jones' words.
"We're really trying to just rely on our defense for games where we don't score efficiently," Jones said, "and so far, my group has bought into that. I've said it before, we are staying true to this process of improving every day, and it's been keeping us in games so far and we'll have to rely on that (our defense) all year long."

HAYDEN, Idaho - Casey Gleason made a pair of free throws with about four seconds left to lift Pullman Christian to victory over Christian Center in a matchup of unbeaten Mountain Christian League clubs.
The Eagles (5-0 overall, 3-0 in league) led by 12 points at halftime, but watched the Lions (3-1, 3-1) rally to take a three-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Pullman Christian's Calvin Dooley made a bucket with about a minute to left to cut the margin to one, then Gleason tied the score with a free throw.
When the Eagles got the ball back in the final seconds, it was still tied. They missed a shot, but Cameron Hewitt got the rebound and fed Gleason, who was fouled to set up his game-winning free throws. Ethan Mitchell then grabbed a steal to ice Pullman Christian's win.
