ASOTIN - Ian Hurst hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first to stake Asotin to an early lead, and the Panthers cruised to an 8-0 nonleague baseball win over Orofino in their season opener Tuesday.

"It's a big win. Orofino's a great club, they have great tradition," Asotin coach Jim Holman said.

The Panthers got a solid mound performance from Aaron Trimmell, who went five innings while striking out nine and yielding no walks.

The Panthers tacked on four more runs in the final two innings.

ASOTIN - The Maniacs exploded in their season debut, a nonleague contest.

Shania Odell swung for seven RBI and the Maniacs put up 10 runs within the first three innings.

"We definitely came out swinging," Orofino coach Justin Haag said of his squad, which was led by Odell, who nearly went for the cycle. She hit a home run, a triple and a double, and needed just a single to complete the wheel.

"If you score 20 runs, you're going to win a lot of games," Haag added.

Prairie 21, CV 0

KOOSKIA - Playing its first game as a program in two years, the Clearwater Valley softball team showed heart, but it wasn't enough to overcome perennial powerhouse Prairie of Cottonwood.

"I give CV a lot of credit, they played their hearts out for their first game in two years," Prairie coach Jeff Martin said.

In a game that was shortened to three innings because of the 15-run rule, Prairie hurler Leah Holthaus struck out six and walked four en route to three hitless innings.

"Holthaus did a fair job on the mound," Martin said.

Prairie will next take on Kellogg in a doubleheader on Saturday at Lewiston's Airport Park.

The Knights scored their first tally in the 19th minute on a boot from Kane Heaton.

They would add two more in the half, one of which came on a Clarkston own goal.

In the second half, the Bantam defense tightened up and kept East Valley mostly in check.

"They began to fuse and understand how the team works," Richert said. "What kept us in it was a good, tight defense that was communicating well."

In his first varsity game, Clarkston sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Walker made 17 saves.
