NAMPA - After two emotionally draining games for the Grangeville Bulldogs, they fell to Nampa Christian 11-1 on Saturday in the Idaho Class 2A state baseball championship game.

The Bulldogs put themselves in this position with come-from-behind victories over Declo and Malad on Thursday and Friday.

"We played two games prior to today that were really emotional," Grangeville coach Lee Nadiger said.

The Bulldogs came into this game without both of their ace pitchers, who had reached their pitch limit. Senior Trent Hunter got the start for the Bulldogs and would be relieved by Michael Woods in the fifth inning.

"Trent threw really well for us today," Nadiger said. "He came into the championship game for us and stepped on the mound and played a fantastic game."

Hunter also had the lone hit for the Bulldogs, smacking a double. But for the rest of the Bulldogs, the bats just weren't connecting, possibly due to being exhausted from the previous two games.

"Both of those games were really emotional and honestly I think we just ran out of gas," Nadiger said. "We were having problems in the field and at the plate."

Nadiger expressed a lot of gratitude for his senior class.

"Trent Hunter, Kolton Key, Tyler Stephens, Easton McEwen and Ethan Bonn, I really appreciate those guys. They played really well," he said. "Not a lot of Grangeville seniors can say their last ever baseball game was in the state championship.

Chase Adkison notched a .650 batting average this season, which set a single-season Grangeville record.

BOISE - Shortly after his team fell in the Idaho Class 5A third-place game, Lewiston coach Davey Steele reminded his team of all it had accomplished this season, which closed with a lopsided loss at Capital High.

"We lost 11 or 12 seniors off last year's team," Steele said. "Almost all those guys are playing college baseball this year and when I looked around at (Saturday's) game, there were only three faces that were at the state tournament last year. For some of these guys, it's the first time they've been to State in anything. So getting to State is an accomplishment."

Before they even got up to bat, the Bengals fell behind Post Falls 4-0.

"The last two games didn't go very well for us, obviously," Steele said, "but the thing I told the guys at the end of the game was not to let those last two games define the season.

"They should be proud of what they accomplished. There's banners in Booth Hall for every sport and there will be a 2018 (banner) up there for a district title (in baseball). That's something to be proud of."

Another thing the Bengals can be proud of?

Kyle Van Boeyen's two-run blast on Saturday, which accounted for half his team's offense.

"We finished the season .500," Steele said of his 14-14 squad. "But we still won a district title and made it down here. I think we're leaving the program in a good place moving into next year."

Genesee falls in title game

CALDWELL - Improving upon last year's fourth-place finish at State, Genesee fell in the Idaho Class 1A title game at Quad Park.

Notus won 3-0 in a pitcher's duel.

Earlier in the day, in the state semifinals, Genesee beat Prairie 15-2.

"I'm proud of the girls, they did a heck of a job," Genesee coach Brian Malcom said.

The difference in the title game came down to timely hitting. Notus had it. Genesee (22-3), which had people on in the third, fourth and fifth innings, didn't.

"It was a really good game," Malcom said. "Really tight the whole time."

In the title game, Bartosz fanned five to bring her day's tally to nine strikeouts.

Bartosz had four RBI in the first game, twice as many as the nearest teammate, Sidney Fountain.
