CALDWELL - Reggie Tilleman collected 14 points and 10 rebounds as hard-nosed but injury-touched Genesee beat Notus 39-24 on Thursday in a first-round game of the Idaho 1A Division I boys' basketball tournament at Vallivue High.

"I guess anytime you hold an opponent to 24 points in a state tournament, you played pretty good defense," Genesee coach Jeff Boyd said.

The Bulldogs (18-7) now brace for high-powered Prairie of Cottonwood in a semifinal game at 5:15 p.m. PST today.

Questionable for Genesee are Rhett Stout and Reece Wayt with, respectively, a hip bruise and a knee bruise, sustained in Thursday's game. Among those who filled in capably in the late going was freshman Jake DeMeerleer.

Ben Druffel had eight points and six rebounds for Genesee. Notus was paced by Nick Morgan's eight points.

The Bulldogs held Notus to 24-percent shooting while converting 49 percent themselves. So it didn't matter that Notus attempted seven more shots, particularly in light of its 33-20 disadvantage in rebounding.

In a defense-dominated game, neither team cracked double digits in any quarter aside from Genesee's 12-point output in the first.

Kendrick 47, Cascade 36

CALDWELL - Morgan Kerby scored 17 points and Braden Smith pulled down 18 rebounds as Kendrick defeated Cascade in the opening round of the Idaho 1A Division II tournament at Caldwell High.

The Tigers (9-15), who overcame a three-point halftime deficit, face Salmon River 2 p.m. PST today in the semifinals.

Kendrick held the Ramblers to 25-percent shooting and, in particular, Crosby Crevelt to a 3-for-22 effort.

Kerby furnished nine rebounds and four steals and Smith nabbed eight offensive boards for the Tigers, who outscored Cascade 17-7 in the third quarter.

TJ Hubbard scored 15 points for the Ramblers (15-10), who got 11 and 10 rebounds respectively from Hubbard and Zach Redmon.

Sal. River 65, Carey 45

CALDWELL - Leighton Vander Esch provided his usual dominant performance to guide Salmon River to a first-round victory over Carey in the Division II portion of the Idaho state 1A tournament.

Vander Esch came up with 27 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the Savages, who led 40-22 at halftime at Caldwell High.

But the Savages (21-2) may be without 6-foot-6 post McCoy Hale when they play Kendrick today in the semifinals at 2 p.m. PST. Hale turned an ankle late in the third quarter and experienced significant swelling, Salmon River coach Charlie Shepherd said.

"Without him, that makes Kendrick more challenging, because they're pretty big underneath," Shepherd said.

Terrun Zolman scored 16 points for the Riggins team, going 8-for-10 at the foul line, and Hale contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.

Shepherd was pleased with his team's defense, especially on Carey standout Nate Adamson.

"Offensively we sputtered a little bit, missed some easy shots," Shepherd said. "We never did get it going from the outside. Zolman did an excellent job at the free-throw line."
